12 Inch Marble Chess Sets

Twelve inches is the size most people should buy and the one they think about last. It is large enough that the pieces have room between squares and the board reads as furniture rather than an ornament, and small enough to leave out permanently on a desk that already has a lamp and a laptop on it. It is also the deepest part of our range of marble chess sets — fifty-two boards, more than either of the other two sizes.

Three formats sit on this page, and the difference matters more than the colour does. The boxed sets are the traditional answer: a framed board, a storage box for the pieces, and adhesive felt pads supplied for you to apply to the bases. The borderless sets have no frame, so the squares run to the edge of the stone, and they arrive with felt already on the board and on each piece — no box, and a lower price for it. Eight of the boards are round rather than square, and eight are supplied with minimalist geometric pieces that read closer to sculpture than to a traditional set.

Every set carries thirty-two pieces and two extra queens. The scale differs slightly by format: on a boxed set the king stands 3 inches, on a borderless set 2.7, with the queen at 2.5 and pawns at 2. Weight is the part people underestimate — one boxed set lists a total of 15.6 lb, which is roughly what a stone board of this size runs to and why it stays where you put it.

Stone is the last decision and the one that dates a board or doesn't. Black and white reads clearly from across a room and never looks of its moment. Verona is warm and densely veined; travertine paler, with the natural pitting that marks it out; oceanic cool grey-blue. Coral, fossil coral and brown run earthy, and zebra black is the most dramatic thing we cut. Every board is natural stone, so the veining on yours will not repeat — the colour family matches the photograph, the pattern does not. Care is a soft, damp microfiber cloth and nothing acidic, since vinegar and lemon etch marble permanently.

If you are between sizes, the honest test is the surface rather than the player. A board that has to be moved for dinner is the wrong size for the room. Our marble chess set size guide puts all three against real desks and tables with the measurements you need before ordering.

For a side table, a shelf, or a first set in real stone, the 10 inch marble chess sets are the most compact format we make. For a board meant to hold a room and stay set up, the 15 inch marble chess sets are the largest.
