Christmas Chess Set Gifts in Handcrafted Marble

Most Christmas presents are opened, admired and put away by New Year. A marble chess set tends to go the other way: it comes out of the box, gets set up on a table, and is still there when the decorations come down. What arrives is consistent across the collection. A polished stone board, 32 hand-polished pieces at sixteen a side, and adhesive felt pads for the piece bases so the set can sit on a wooden table without marking it. Most sets add two extra queens for pawn promotion, and many come in a storage box with cut foam inserts, which keeps the pieces from knocking together and gives the recipient somewhere to put them between games. Size is the first real decision. Fifteen-inch boards are the format for a living room or study, where the board stays out and becomes part of the room. Twelve-inch boards leave space on a desk or coffee table for everything else that lives there, and ten-inch boards are the right fit for a small apartment or a first stone set. A few boards are round rather than square, and a few are borderless, with no outer frame, so the whole footprint is playing surface.

It usually helps to start from the person rather than the board. Someone who already owns a set wants a stone they do not have yet. A beginner wants something they will not be nervous to play on. Stone is where the sets separate from one another. Black and white gives the sharpest contrast and suits a study or office. Oceanic runs cool grey-blue and sits easily in a lighter room. Verona reads warm and dense, green onyx has a translucency ordinary marble does not, and the coral pairings bring an earthier tone. Travertine is paler, with the natural pitting that marks the stone, and black and golden is the most dramatic combination in the range. Care is the same for all of them: a soft, damp microfiber cloth, and nothing acidic, because vinegar and lemon etch marble.
