Modern Marble Chess Sets

Not every chess set needs to look like it came out of a library. The sets on this page take the same natural stone as the rest of our marble chess sets and change the shape around it: boards without a frame, boards that are round instead of square, and pieces reduced to clean geometric forms. They are made to be played on, and made to be looked at between games.

The borderless boards drop the outer frame entirely, so the whole surface is playing squares. Most are twelve-inch, which suits a coffee table or a console, and there are ten-inch versions for a desk or a shelf. Several are paired with minimalist geometric pieces, where each figure is simplified to a few clean lines instead of the traditional carved shapes.

The round boards change the outline. A circle sits differently on a table than a square does, softer and less formal, and it stands out in a room full of straight lines. They come in twelve-inch and fifteen-inch sizes, and the round sets are listed with a storage box and two extra queens.

The stone pairings here are more varied than the classic range: travertine with white or oceanic, zebra black with coral or oceanic, coral and red, oceanic with white, black or verona, and white and green.
